And in other news, I took a few days off to travel and ended up here in Buffalo, home of the Great Tree Massacre of 2006. The freak storm that rendered the city snowbound and without power for days was so unexpected that some local newspapers and TV stations are actually asking the public to submit names to call the event. Some suggestions: October Surprise, Arborgeddon, The Day The Trees Died. Here are a few pictures that don't do justice to to the devastation.

I suppose it sounds weird to be sad for the trees. I mean, they're not people, you know? But if you could see all the tree-lined streets and acres of woodland with mangled trees and torn and broken branches hanging limply, it breaks your heart!
